A six-lane elevated corridor will be built between Delhi’s Outer Ring Road and the Mehrauli-Badarpur Road, bypassing around 12 traffic intersections on the 5.5-kilometre stretch of Maa Anandmayi Marg, according to a report by Live Hindustan – NCR.
The project is among two major road interventions approved to improve traffic movement around Mukarba Chowk in north-west Delhi and the Mehrauli-Badarpur Road corridor in south Delhi. The proposed elevated road will carry traffic above the junctions, reducing the number of intersections vehicles must cross at ground level.
The corridor will run from the Outer Ring Road to the Mehrauli-Badarpur Road. The report said the project is expected to improve traffic operations on Maa Anandmayi Marg while easing congestion at multiple crossings. It also said an underpass proposed at the Crown Plaza intersection, along with traffic arrangements between the roundabout and Okhla Estate Road, would further support movement in the area.
At ground level, the project is expected to create scope for improvements to pedestrian movement and non-motorised transport infrastructure along Maa Anandmayi Marg. The report did not provide a construction start date, completion schedule or project cost for the elevated corridor.
At Mukarba Chowk, the existing six-lane railway overbridge will be expanded to 10 lanes. The widening is intended to address traffic pressure on one of north-west Delhi’s busy road links. Details of the construction timeline and traffic-management arrangements during the expansion were not provided in the report.
The Public Works Department has also started the process of constructing three new foot overbridges in north and west Delhi. The bridges will include lifts, allowing older people, patients and persons with disabilities to cross busy roads more easily. The three projects are estimated to cost around Rs 11.56 crore and are targeted for completion within six months.
Two of the foot overbridges will be built in Janakpuri, west Delhi. One is planned near Mata Chanan Devi Hospital at the C-1 red light on Pankha Road, while the other will come up near the Jeevan Park bus stand at the Major Deepak Tyagi red light. The third bridge will be built on the Badli-Bawana Road in the Shahbad Dairy area of north Delhi. A PWD official cited in the report said the locations near a hospital and a bus stand are expected to serve thousands of pedestrians every day.
Separate pedestrian-safety works are also planned along the Delhi-Dehradun Expressway. Union Minister of State for Road Transport and Highways Harsh Malhotra laid the foundation stones for two foot overbridges near the Geeta Colony cremation ground and Ramesh Park, the report said. A third foot overbridge near Garhi Mendu village has been approved and is expected to be taken up soon.
The projects combine grade-separated road infrastructure with pedestrian crossings equipped with lifts. The next milestones are the construction process for the elevated corridor and railway-overbridge expansion, the six-month implementation target for the three PWD foot overbridges, and the start of work on the approved bridge near Garhi Mendu.
