New Delhi: After two days of unseasonal rain and cooler temperatures, the National Capital Region is preparing for another weather reversal, with forecasts indicating a steady rise in daytime heat and humidity beginning Sunday.
For millions across Delhi, Noida, Ghaziabad, Gurugram and Faridabad, the shift signals not just discomfort but another reminder of the region’s increasing climate volatility. The India Meteorological Department has projected partly cloudy conditions with isolated chances of thunder and lightning across the urban belt, but no major weather warning has been issued. Early morning temperatures hovered around 28°C, while the mercury is expected to climb to nearly 38°C by late afternoon. The latest Delhi NCR weather pattern follows a brief cooling phase triggered by a western disturbance, which had temporarily lowered temperatures and improved outdoor conditions. But as that system weakens, atmospheric moisture remains trapped over the region, creating higher humidity levels and increasing the “feels-like” temperature. Urban climate experts say such sharp swings between rainfall and heat are becoming more frequent due to changing regional weather cycles and expanding built-up surfaces.
Dense concrete zones, shrinking green cover, and rising vehicle emissions continue to amplify the urban heat island effect, especially in high-density districts. For city residents, the return of humidity poses immediate challenges. Construction workers, street vendors and gig-economy delivery staff remain among the most exposed groups, particularly in areas with limited shade or cooling infrastructure. Public health professionals warn that while formal heatwave alerts may be absent, humid heat can still elevate dehydration risks and respiratory stress. The Delhi NCR weather trend also intersects with broader urban management concerns. Water demand typically rises during humid spells, placing added pressure on already stretched supply systems in satellite cities. Power consumption is also expected to increase as cooling needs intensify, raising concerns over peak load management.
Meanwhile, air quality has shown modest improvement. Central pollution monitoring data placed Delhi’s Air Quality Index in the “moderate” range on Saturday, aided by recent rainfall and wind activity. However, environmental planners caution that stagnant, moisture-heavy conditions can quickly worsen pollution levels once temperatures rise.For a region grappling with rapid urbanisation and climate stress, such weather shifts are increasingly becoming a governance challenge. Experts argue that long-term resilience will depend on heat-responsive infrastructure, better stormwater systems, expanded tree cover, and more inclusive public cooling strategies. As temperatures begin climbing again this week, city agencies may avoid crisis mode for now but the recurring cycle of heat, rain and humidity is reinforcing one reality: climate adaptation in India’s fastest-growing urban corridor can no longer remain reactive.
