Delhi NCR Expressways Prepare Faster Emergency Response

Delhi-NCR’s expanding network of highways and expressways is set for a major upgrade in road safety infrastructure, with authorities planning to deploy an automated crash detection system across some of the region’s busiest mobility corridors. The move is expected to improve emergency response times, reduce fatalities and strengthen traffic management on routes that now carry millions of daily commuters and freight vehicles.

The initiative, led by the highway management arm of the national roads authority, will introduce Video Incident Detection Systems (VIDS) across 11 strategic corridors linking Delhi with key urban and industrial centres including Gurugram, Faridabad, Meerut and Dehradun. Officials familiar with the project said the technology is expected to become operational in phases during the current financial year. The system relies on AI-enabled cameras and sensor-based monitoring to identify collisions, vehicle breakdowns, lane obstructions and pedestrian-related incidents in real time. Once detected, alerts will be transmitted instantly to integrated command centres, allowing ambulances and emergency teams to be dispatched faster than the existing call-based reporting mechanism. Urban mobility experts say the deployment reflects a wider shift in Indian transport planning, where road infrastructure is increasingly being paired with digital surveillance and predictive traffic systems to improve commuter safety.

Delhi-NCR has witnessed rapid expressway expansion in recent years, but emergency response infrastructure has struggled to keep pace with rising traffic density and vehicle speeds. The planned rollout will cover major stretches of the Delhi-Meerut Expressway, Delhi-Mumbai Expressway, Dehradun Expressway and the Delhi-Gurugram section of NH-48, among others. These corridors are not only critical commuter routes but also key economic connectors supporting logistics movement, airport access and industrial growth across the National Capital Region. Transport analysts note that faster detection of road crashes could play a significant role in lowering fatalities during the “golden hour” the crucial period immediately after an accident when timely medical intervention can save lives. India continues to report one of the world’s highest numbers of road accident deaths, with high-speed corridors accounting for a significant share of severe crashes.

The Video Incident Detection System is also expected to strengthen the region’s Advanced Traffic Management System by enabling authorities to monitor congestion patterns, stalled vehicles and weather-related disruptions more efficiently. Experts argue that such intelligent transport systems are becoming essential for large urban regions attempting to balance economic growth with safer and more sustainable mobility networks. Alongside the safety upgrade, discussions are also intensifying around the future of toll operations on the Faridabad-Gurugram road, where an existing concession agreement is nearing expiry. Commuters and resident groups have long argued that removing toll barriers on heavily urbanised corridors could ease traffic bottlenecks, lower fuel wastage and reduce vehicular emissions caused by idling traffic. As Delhi-NCR continues to invest in high-capacity transport infrastructure, planners say the next phase of urban mobility will depend not only on building faster roads, but on creating smarter, safer and more responsive systems that place public safety and commuter efficiency at the centre of infrastructure expansion.
