Delhi Metro Stations Reopen After 11-Hour Security Closure

Delhi Metro stations reopened fully at 5 pm on Monday after the Delhi Metro Rail Corporation (DMRC) closed the entry and exit gates of six central stations for security reasons earlier in the day.

The affected stations were Patel Chowk, Janpath, Rajiv Chowk, Mandi House, Central Secretariat and Barakhamba Road. Their entry and exit gates had remained closed from 6 am, restricting passenger access in central Delhi for 11 hours.

In an update on X, the DMRC said that the entry and exit gates of all stations across the Delhi Metro network were open. It also confirmed that interchange facilities at the affected stations were available for passenger use.

The temporary restrictions were imposed ahead of a protest announced by the Congress against Chief Election Commissioner Gyanesh Kumar. Security was stepped up in parts of the capital, with additional deployment of paramilitary personnel and barricading at key intersections, according to the report.

The closures affected stations that serve major government, commercial and interchange locations. Rajiv Chowk and Central Secretariat are among the network’s prominent central Delhi stations, while Mandi House and Janpath also serve busy office, cultural and institutional areas. The restrictions therefore disrupted both direct station access and movement through central parts of the network during the day.

The security measures came as political protests took place in the area. Aam Aadmi Party leaders, including Rajya Sabha MP Sanjay Singh and Saurabh Bhardwaj, were detained after a scuffle between party workers and security personnel near Janpath Metro station, the report said. Protesters and leaders were reported to have raised slogans against the Central government and Chief Election Commissioner Gyanesh Kumar.

The DMRC’s reopening announcement restored normal entry, exit and interchange access at the six stations. The available information does not indicate any continuing station-level restriction after 5 pm, although security deployment and barricading had been increased in parts of the city.
