Delhi Metro Magenta Line Extension Set for December Launch

The Delhi Metro’s Magenta Line extension between Keshopur and Pushpanjali is expected to begin trial runs this month, with passenger services likely to start by the end of December, according to a report citing the Delhi Metro Rail Corporation (DMRC). The six-kilometre section will add six stations and connect the corridor with four major metro lines across Delhi.

The stretch is part of the 29-kilometre Janakpuri West–RK Ashram corridor being built under Phase IV of the Delhi Metro network. The section between Keshopur and Pushpanjali is reported to be substantially complete, allowing testing of the infrastructure and driverless trains to begin.

The six stations on the stretch are Keshavpur, Paschim Vihar, Peeragarhi, Mangolpuri, West Enclave and Pushpanjali. Peeragarhi will serve as an interchange with the existing Green Line. A 160-metre foot overbridge has been constructed at the station to facilitate passenger movement between the two corridors.

The new section will complete a key missing link in the Phase IV corridor, which is being opened in stages. Metro services began on the 1.81-kilometre Janakpuri West–Krishna Park Extension section on January 5 last year. A further 9.9-kilometre section between Deepali Chowk and Majlis Park opened on March 8 this year. The six stations between Krishna Park Extension and Deepali Chowk are also part of the same corridor.

Once the Keshopur–Pushpanjali section becomes operational, the extended Magenta Line will connect with the Green Line at Peeragarhi, the Red Line at Pitampura, the Yellow Line at Haiderpur Badli Mor and the Pink Line at Majlis Park. This will create a direct metro connection between northwest Delhi, south Delhi, Terminal 1 of the airport and Botanical Garden in Noida, according to the report.

The extension is expected to increase the length of the Magenta Line to 55 kilometres up to Majlis Park. The wider National Capital Region metro network will reach approximately 422 kilometres, with the number of stations rising to 309 once the section opens.

The project’s immediate milestone is the start of trial operations on the six-kilometre stretch. Passenger services will begin after testing and the required operational clearances are completed, with the report placing the expected start of regular service by the end of December.
