A shopper was injured in a daylight shooting at Delhi’s Karam Pura market on Saturday morning after two motorcycle-borne men allegedly opened fire at another man and escaped while waving pistols, according to a report by Live Hindustan – NCR. The incident took place during the Diwali shopping period, when large crowds were visiting markets across the capital and the city was reported to be under heightened security.
The bullet missed Neeraj, who had been targeted during a shopping trip with his son, and struck Amit, who was standing nearby. Amit sustained an injury to his right leg and was taken to Acharya Bhikshu Hospital, where he was undergoing treatment, the report said. The shooting caused panic in the market, with people running for safety after the gunfire.
According to the report, the two accused arrived on a motorcycle at around 10 am and fired at Neeraj while he was shopping in Karam Pura. After the shot missed its intended target, the attackers allegedly displayed their pistols and fled from the area. The report did not identify the accused or establish the reason for the attack.
Moti Nagar police registered a case under provisions of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita and the Arms Act and began an investigation. Police were examining CCTV footage from the market to identify the attackers and reconstruct their escape route. Investigators were also questioning Neeraj about the incident and its possible motive.
The report said preliminary police checks had not found any criminal history for Neeraj. This information remains part of the initial investigation, while the police are continuing to establish whether the shooting was targeted and whether the injured bystander was struck accidentally.
The incident has raised immediate concerns about security and patrolling in crowded commercial areas during the festive shopping season. Live Hindustan – NCR reported that around 50,000 police personnel and officers had been deployed at different locations in Delhi as part of heightened Diwali security arrangements. The shooting nevertheless took place in a busy market during the morning, when shoppers were present.
For residents and traders, the case underscores the operational challenge of securing open, crowded markets where vehicles, pedestrians and shopfront activity overlap. The available report does not provide details of additional security measures introduced at Karam Pura after the shooting or whether any arrests had been made. Police were continuing efforts to identify the accused through CCTV footage and determine the motive behind the attack.
