New Delhi: Commuters travelling through the ITO corridor are likely to face another monsoon with recurring waterlogging as a planned upgrade of the area’s pumping infrastructure is expected to be completed only after the current rainy season. While authorities have approved investment to modernise the ageing pumping station, the delayed execution means one of Delhi’s most flood-prone transport junctions will continue to remain vulnerable during periods of intense rainfall.
The Public Works Department has initiated a project valued at approximately ₹1.3 crore to strengthen the ITO pumping station, which plays a critical role in draining stormwater from surrounding locations including Vikas Marg, the Supreme Court Metro station precinct and the Tilak Bridge underpass. These stretches routinely witness traffic disruption during heavy showers, affecting daily commuters, emergency movement and commercial activity in the capital’s central district. Officials associated with the project indicate that the upgrade is expected to take around three months, effectively ruling out any immediate impact during this year’s monsoon. The work includes installation of an all-weather electrical substation designed to ensure uninterrupted power supply to pumping equipment during storms, along with automated monitoring and digital alert systems intended to improve operational response.
The continued ITO waterlogging challenge highlights the broader issue of ageing urban drainage infrastructure struggling to cope with increasingly intense rainfall events linked to changing climate patterns. Urban planners have repeatedly pointed out that flood resilience depends not only on pumping capacity but also on integrated stormwater management, regular desilting, sewer maintenance and coordinated planning across civic agencies. The corridor has already undergone drainage interventions in recent years, including reconstruction of a key drain serving government office complexes between IP Estate and adjoining administrative zones. Despite these efforts, surface flooding has continued to occur during peak rainfall, suggesting that isolated engineering measures alone may not resolve systemic drainage deficiencies. Infrastructure experts also identify the interaction between stormwater drains and an ageing sewer network as a significant concern.
Sections of the historic sewer system passing through central Delhi are prone to overflowing during intense rain, causing wastewater to emerge through manholes and mix with surface runoff. Such conditions not only worsen ITO waterlogging but also raise sanitation and public health concerns during the monsoon. The economic implications extend beyond commuter inconvenience. Traffic congestion at one of Delhi’s busiest intersections disrupts logistics, increases fuel consumption, elevates vehicular emissions and affects productivity across government and commercial districts. As climate-related weather extremes become more frequent, resilient drainage infrastructure is increasingly being viewed as an essential urban investment rather than a reactive civic expenditure. The forthcoming upgrade could improve long-term operational reliability once completed. However, urban mobility experts suggest that Delhi’s flood-prone corridors will require continuous infrastructure audits, integrated drainage planning and climate-responsive design standards to reduce recurring disruption and strengthen resilience across the city’s transport network.
