Delhi-Gurgaon Expressway to Undergo Rs 245 Crore Upgrade

The 28 km Delhi-Gurgaon Expressway is set for a long-overdue revamp, as the National Highways Authority of India (NHAI) allocates Rs 245 crore for a comprehensive renovation of one of the most critical transportation corridors in India’s National Capital Region (NCR).

Stretching from Rao Tula Ram Marg in Delhi to Kherki Daula in Gurgaon, this route, part of the vital Delhi-Jaipur National Highway 8, has faced severe strain due to the rapid increase in traffic volume. With over 3 lakh passenger cars using the expressway daily, the road is operating well beyond its capacity, creating daily traffic jams and posing significant safety hazards. The much-needed upgrades come as part of a larger strategy to modernise the country’s infrastructure and enhance safety, ultimately contributing to smoother and more sustainable urban mobility.

The major overhaul will focus on resurfacing the entire stretch, covering the 10 km in Delhi and 18 km in Gurgaon. NHAI officials have confirmed that work will include the recarpeting of carriageways and service lanes, reinforcing pavement layers, especially in high-traffic areas such as underpasses and flyovers. Furthermore, safety features like road signage, improved lighting with a minimum of 40 lux, and reinforced metal crash barriers will be implemented to significantly reduce the risk of accidents. One of the most pressing issues being addressed is the perennial problem of flooding on the Narsinghpur service road, which often disrupts traffic during the monsoon. In response, NHAI plans to rebuild the service roads using ready-mix concrete (RMC), a durable material designed to reduce frequent repairs caused by waterlogging. This initiative is expected to offer lasting solutions to recurring infrastructure failures, improving not only traffic flow but also the environmental sustainability of the area by reducing waste from constant road repairs.

The upgrade also focuses on improving the environmental footprint of the expressway by incorporating sustainable practices. The project aligns with the government’s larger objective to create greener, more sustainable cities by reducing congestion and vehicle emissions. A smoother traffic flow will result in lower carbon emissions and contribute to a cleaner and more eco-friendly commute. Safety and efficiency will be the primary concerns during the execution phase, and NHAI has assured that the work will take approximately two years to complete, with tenders for the project expected to be floated shortly. Given the crucial role the expressway plays in connecting Delhi to Gurgaon, its renovation is expected to significantly reduce travel time and improve quality of life for commuters.

With traffic management solutions also being explored, the revamp is not just about physical infrastructure but also about improving the overall experience for daily commuters. By addressing long-standing issues such as flooding and congestion, the project represents a step forward in the government’s mission to modernise NCR’s infrastructure and make it more resilient in the face of future challenges.
