Delhi Grapples with Power Outage After UP Station Blaze

A significant power outage affected many parts of Delhi on June 11 following a fire at a power sub-station in Mandola, Uttar Pradesh. The incident disrupted the supply from the Mandola sub-station, which provides 1200 MW of power to Delhi.

Officials attributed the outage to a snag in the grid stations operated by Delhi Transco Ltd, exacerbated by high power demand and soaring temperatures. Government engineers are working diligently to resolve the issue and ensure the prompt restoration of power. The outage commenced at 2:11 pm, affecting predominantly the eastern and central regions of Delhi. A representative from the Power Grid Corporation of India Ltd (PGCIL) confirmed the fire at the Mandola sub-station as the cause. The restoration process has since begun, with electricity gradually returning to the impacted areas.

The failure in the power grid has raised concerns among officials, prompting them to seek a meeting with the Central Power Minister and the Chairman of PGCIL to discuss the issue. Discom officials have emphasised the urgency of the situation, highlighting the need for swift action to prevent future occurrences.

This incident underscores the vulnerability of the power infrastructure to unforeseen disruptions and the critical importance of robust contingency measures. As Delhi continues to experience high temperatures and increased power demand, the authorities are urged to take comprehensive steps to ensure the reliability and stability of the power supply.
