Delhi Flyover Plans Target Two Major Traffic Bottlenecks
Delhi is moving ahead with preliminary planning for two elevated road projects that could alter traffic movement across some of the capital’s most congested stretches. The proposed corridors in northeast and west Delhi would together cover roughly 10 kilometres, with feasibility studies now set to examine whether the projects can improve mobility without creating new pressure on neighbourhoods, utilities and the urban environment.
One proposed elevated road would run above the Karawal Nagar drain, linking Ankur Enclave with Gokulpuri Metro station. The second is planned along Guru Harkishan Road, connecting Britannia Chowk with the Outer Ring Road through the Shakur Basti railway station area. Both routes pass through dense urban zones where narrow road space, mixed traffic and high commuter volumes regularly contribute to delays. The Public Works Department is seeking a private consultant to assess the technical and economic viability of the projects. The study, estimated to cost around ₹3.2 crore, will go beyond a basic traffic count. It is expected to examine existing buildings, encroachments, trees, road furniture and other permanent structures along the proposed alignments. A major part of the assessment will involve mapping underground and roadside infrastructure, including electricity, water and gas networks.
Parking availability and railway crossing operations will also be studied, factors that could significantly influence construction design and future traffic management. The consultant will be required to prepare preliminary layouts for elevated structures, underpasses and overbridges, along with associated street infrastructure. This is expected to include footpaths, service roads, non-motorised transport lanes, central medians and bus stops. Peak-hour traffic volumes and overall vehicle movement will also form part of the feasibility exercise. For Delhi, the projects highlight a familiar infrastructure challenge: expanding road capacity while working within already built-up neighbourhoods. Elevated roads can separate through-traffic from local movement, but their wider value depends on how well they protect pedestrian access, public transport connectivity and existing urban services.
Urban planners say the cost-benefit assessment will be particularly important in deciding whether faster vehicle movement justifies the construction footprint, environmental impact and long-term maintenance burden. In dense areas, reducing congestion cannot be measured only by travel time; the impact on trees, walkability, local access and public transport must also be considered. The feasibility report will ultimately determine whether the proposals advance towards detailed project planning and statutory approvals. The next phase, therefore, will be critical in establishing whether these corridors become effective mobility interventions or simply add more road infrastructure to a city increasingly struggling to balance movement, liveability and sustainable growth.
