Delhi is assessing two new elevated road corridors as authorities look to address persistent congestion in densely built neighbourhoods and improve access to public transport. A proposed route over the Karawal Nagar drain could connect Ankur Enclave with Gokulpuri Metro station, while a separate corridor in north-west Delhi is being examined between Britannia Chowk and the Outer Ring Road through the Shakur Basti area.
The eastern Delhi proposal has now entered the technical assessment phase. The Public Works Department is initiating work on a feasibility study and Detailed Project Report (DPR), which will examine whether an elevated alignment over the drain can be delivered safely, efficiently and at a viable cost. Traffic surveys, route options, preliminary engineering and construction requirements will shape the final recommendation. The proposal matters because Karawal Nagar and adjoining neighbourhoods have limited road capacity but high daily travel demand. An additional corridor could offer an alternative route for local traffic and improve last-mile access to Gokulpuri Metro. However, the project’s value will depend on more than vehicle speeds. Its design will need to consider pedestrian movement, crossings, drainage, construction disruption and safe access for residents living along the corridor.
The proposed Karawal Nagar elevated road is also a reminder of a wider challenge facing Delhi: transport infrastructure is often being added after neighbourhoods have already become heavily built up. In such settings, elevated construction can create new capacity, but it can also shift congestion to entry and exit points if it is not integrated with public transport and local street networks. A similar approach is being taken in north-west Delhi, where a roughly six-kilometre elevated corridor is planned from Britannia Chowk towards the Outer Ring Road via Guru Harkishan Road and the Shakur Basti railway station area. Consultancy work for the project has received administrative approval, with the feasibility assessment and DPR expected to examine traffic movement and the technical viability of the alignment.
The corridor could improve movement between residential areas, industrial zones and major road networks. Yet the broader urban outcome will depend on whether faster road travel is balanced with better rail access, walking infrastructure and efficient public transport connections. A road project that simply moves congestion further along the network would offer limited long-term relief. For both corridors, the next decisive step is evidence from the studies now being prepared. The Karawal Nagar elevated road and the north-west Delhi proposal will need clear traffic data, realistic cost assessments and designs that protect local accessibility. For a city facing rising mobility demand and climate pressures, infrastructure efficiency will ultimately be measured not only by how quickly vehicles move, but by how safely and equitably people can travel.
