Delhi Electric Buses Expand Access Beyond Main Corridors

Delhi is preparing to add 2,800 air-conditioned electric buses to its public transport network, a move that could extend cleaner mobility beyond the capital’s busiest corridors. The planned fleet combines larger buses for high-demand routes with smaller vehicles suited to narrow roads and underserved neighbourhoods, linking fleet expansion with the wider challenge of making public transport more accessible across a rapidly growing city.

The proposal, cleared by the Delhi Cabinet, includes 1,400 buses measuring 12 metres and another 1,400 measuring nine metres. The smaller vehicles are expected to be particularly useful on roads where conventional full-sized buses face operational constraints. That could improve access in peripheral settlements, unauthorised colonies and areas with weaker links to major transport corridors. For Delhi, the significance of the plan extends beyond replacing conventional vehicles with electric ones. The city is also attempting to increase the scale and reliability of its bus network at a time when congestion, air pollution and uneven access to public transport continue to shape daily travel. The government has set a broader target of taking the overall bus fleet to nearly 14,000 by 2028-29.

The Delhi electric buses programme will also rely on operational changes rather than fleet numbers alone. Authorities plan to work with IIT Delhi on route rationalisation, a process that involves redesigning routes and services to better match passenger demand. Bus Management Systems and electronic ticketing are expected to support closer monitoring of operations and improve the flow of information across the network. The central government’s PM E-DRIVE framework provides financial support of up to ₹35 lakh for each 12-metre bus and ₹25 lakh for each nine-metre bus, potentially reducing the upfront burden of fleet electrification. However, the success of the Delhi electric buses expansion will ultimately depend on the supporting ecosystem, including charging infrastructure, depot capacity, maintenance systems and reliable service frequency.

Urban transport experts say a larger electric fleet can deliver meaningful environmental gains only when buses become a practical alternative to private vehicles. That means dependable routes, shorter waiting times, safe and accessible stops, and better connections between neighbourhoods and mass-transit systems. The planned rollout therefore marks more than a procurement exercise. Its wider test will be whether Delhi can use cleaner buses to close mobility gaps while building a public transport system capable of serving both dense urban districts and the city’s less-connected edges.
