A portion of an illegally constructed house collapsed in East Delhi’s Harsh Vihar on Sunday evening while the first-floor roof slab was being installed, prompting teams from the Delhi Fire Service and the National Disaster Response Force to search for workers who may be trapped under the debris.
The collapse occurred at Milans Garden in Harsh Vihar, where a house was reportedly being constructed on a 200-square-yard plot. The ground floor had already been built and work was under way on the first floor when the roof slab gave way shortly after construction activity ended.
According to Deputy Commissioner of Police Rahul Alwal, the police received information about the collapse at around 6.46 pm. The building was described as an unauthorised construction site. Rescue teams reached the location and began removing debris to determine whether any workers were trapped beneath it.
The report said the first-floor roof slab was being laid on Sunday. Local residents told the police that the structure collapsed after the workers had left the site, although officials said the situation would become clear only after the debris was cleared. No person had been brought out of the rubble at the time of reporting.
The Delhi Fire Service and the NDRF were involved in the rescue operation. Their teams were working at the site to search the collapsed structure and remove the debris. The operation remained under way as authorities assessed the possibility that construction workers could be buried beneath the fallen slab.
Harsh Vihar police were also questioning Kulwinder Tanwar in connection with the incident. The source report did not specify the number of workers who may have been present at the site or confirm whether anyone had been injured or killed.
The incident has brought attention to the risks surrounding construction activity in unauthorised buildings, where the condition of structures and compliance with safety requirements can become difficult to establish. In this case, the immediate priority for the authorities remained locating anyone who might be trapped and securing the collapse site.
Officials were expected to clarify the situation after the rescue teams completed the debris-removal operation. The number of people trapped, if any, and the full circumstances behind the collapse had not been established when the report was published.
