A fresh maintenance push on the Badarpur Elevated Highway is set to extend beyond the main carriageway, bringing service roads, pedestrian facilities and adjoining public infrastructure into the same repair framework. The move could improve daily movement for commuters and local residents while addressing a common weakness in large road projects: the deterioration of the infrastructure that people use to access them.
The maintenance plan covers the 6-lane elevated highway on the Delhi–Agra section of NH-2, including associated service roads, ramps, pedestrian underpasses and parks. The latest tender documents indicate that the wider operation and maintenance package is intended to address the highway and its supporting assets rather than treating the elevated structure as an isolated corridor. A significant share of the proposed expenditure is directed towards the ground-level network. Planned interventions include repairs to damaged service lanes and slip roads, improvements to footpaths, renewal of pedestrian underpasses and upkeep of median landscaping and related structures. The estimated provision for these supporting facilities is around ₹13.74 crore, while the overall maintenance programme is valued at approximately ₹24.20 crore.
For the thousands of people who use the corridor every day, the impact of such work may be more visible away from the elevated deck. Service lanes often carry local traffic, provide access to nearby neighbourhoods and serve as informal links between public transport stops, homes and commercial areas. Poor surfaces, broken pedestrian paths or neglected underpasses can therefore create safety and accessibility problems even when the main highway remains operational. Urban planners say this broader maintenance approach is important as cities increasingly depend on complex, multi-level transport infrastructure. A highway cannot be judged only by vehicle speeds, they argue. The quality of pedestrian access, drainage, lighting, road edges and crossings also determines whether a corridor functions safely and equitably.
The maintenance scope also includes repairs to the main elevated structure, strengthening of the road surface, electrical systems and traffic safety elements. The public tender record describes the corridor as a 4.4-km section running between Km 16.100 and Km 20.500 across Delhi and Haryana. The next test will be execution. For Badarpur Elevated Road, timely completion, safe work zones and durable repairs will matter as much as the allocation itself. A maintenance programme that protects pedestrians, local access and surrounding public spaces could offer a more resilient model for managing major urban highways across the Delhi-NCR region.
