Delhi Airport Runway 10/28 Closure to Impact 200 Flights

Delhi’s Indira Gandhi International Airport (IGIA) is set to close its Runway 10/28 for a critical upgrade starting June 15, 2025, leading to significant disruptions in flight operations. The closure, scheduled until September 15, aims to enhance the runway’s Instrument Landing System (ILS) to Category III B standards, enabling safe landings in low-visibility conditions. This upgrade is particularly crucial for operations during Delhi’s dense winter fog.

The airport operator, Delhi International Airport Limited (DIAL), has coordinated with airlines to manage the impact. Approximately 114 flights will be cancelled daily, and an additional 86 will be rescheduled, affecting nearly 200 flights daily. This represents an 8% cancellation rate, higher than the usual 3-3.5% daily average. The decision to proceed with the upgrade during this period follows a previous attempt in April, which was halted due to unseasonal easterly winds that reduced operational capacity. The timing of the closure has been strategically chosen to minimize disruptions. The period from mid-June to mid-September typically experiences westerly winds, which are more conducive to operations on the remaining runways. Additionally, this timeframe follows the peak tourist season, further reducing potential impact.

Despite these efforts, the closure has led to a reduction in the airport’s capacity. On a typical day, IGIA handles up to 1,200 flights. With one runway closed, the airport is operating at approximately 200 fewer flights daily. This has resulted in delays and cancellations, particularly affecting flights operating during peak hours. Passengers are advised to check with their airlines for updated flight schedules and to allow extra time for check-in and security procedures. DIAL has assured that all other terminals and runways will remain operational during the upgrade.

The completion of this project is expected to enhance the airport’s resilience and ensure smoother flight operations during the challenging winter months, significantly improving the passenger travel experience.
