Coal India signs MoU to solar light iconic Howrah Bridge

Kolkata is set to welcome a luminous transformation of its iconic Howrah Bridge after Coal India Ltd entered into a memorandum of understanding with the Syama Prasad Mookerjee Port (SMPK) for a solar‑powered, dynamic lighting system. This high‑impact initiative aims to elevate the cantilever structure into a nocturnal landmark through volumetric and skeleton lighting techniques, synchronised with curated music shows.

Municipal officials describe it as an urban renaissance with a heritage‑meets‑innovation narrative at its core. The MoU, signed at Coal India’s headquarters, formalises a joint vision to modernise the bridge’s lighting with cutting‑edge LED and projection technologies. SMPK’s deputy chair highlighted that the tendering process commenced in March and envisages full acoustic‑visual integration, complete with a mobile‑app‑based son et lumière experience—within six to eight months of contract award.

Howrah Bridge, commissioned in 1943 and now carrying over 100,000 vehicles and 150,000 pedestrians daily, has long been emblematic of Kolkata’s resilience and historic charm. The current lighting setup, providing depth through volumetric illumination, is slated for a technology‑led upgrade that will project motion, colours, and architectural highlights. According to SMPK experts, the new system will amplify aesthetic appeal without compromising heritage integrity, an approach informed by the port’s recent design competition that emphasised balance between tradition and contemporary innovation.

Despite its promise, the project navigates several challenges. Approval from the Ministry of Culture remains pending, particularly concerning funding outlays for the estimated ₹36‑crore scope of work when partnered with technology firms. There is also pressure to balance ecological stewardship with urban spectacle; experts call for transparency on solar capacity guarantees, energy storage systems, and night‑sky light pollution controls to maintain eco‑friendly standards in line with city-wide zero‑net‑carbon goals.

As procurement processes advance—with tender bids opening by mid‑June—coal‑industry and port‑management officials stress public collaboration. They anticipate that a greener, smarter bridge will serve as a symbol of Kolkata’s evolving urban narrative. In the spirit of equitable cities, the project has been designed to uplift public spaces while ensuring energy‑efficient infrastructure.

Kolkata may look upon Howrah Bridge not just as steel spanning the Hooghly but as a living cultural artery—illuminated by solar power, smart tech, and community pride. In transforming a functional transport link into a nightly celebration of architecture and heritage, the project could become a beacon for inclusive, sustainable urban revitalisation.
