Coal India Ltd has spent ₹7,996 crore on capital expenditure in the first half of 2026-27, exceeding its April-September target by 9 per cent as railway infrastructure, land acquisition, mine development and heavy machinery drove investment at the state-owned miner.
The expenditure rose 27 per cent from ₹6,283 crore in the same period last year, the company said in a statement. It reached 109 per cent of the first-half target of ₹7,286 crore and represented more than 48 per cent of Coal India’s annual capex target of ₹16,500 crore.
Mine infrastructure development was the largest spending category during the period, receiving ₹2,152 crore. The investment covered railway sidings and corridors, coal handling plants, silos and weighbridges. These facilities form part of the infrastructure used to move, process and measure coal from mines, linking extraction operations with evacuation and supply systems.
Land acquisition accounted for another ₹2,033 crore. Coal India also spent more than ₹1,000 crore on mine development, which the company said was intended to support the expansion and operational readiness of mining projects.
Capital expenditure on plant and machinery stood at ₹1,394 crore. This included heavy earth-moving machines, washeries and other equipment. Of this amount, ₹452 crore was spent on procuring heavy earth-moving machinery, which the company said would strengthen mining operations and improve operational efficiency.
Coal India’s spending also extended beyond its core mining activities. The company invested more than ₹739 crore in diversification projects during the first half of the financial year. These projects include solar energy, critical minerals, coal gasification and thermal power generation.
Together, mine infrastructure, plant and machinery, land acquisition and diversification accounted for more than 79 per cent of Coal India’s total capex between April and September 2026. The allocation shows that the company’s current investment programme is concentrated on both expanding mining capacity and strengthening the infrastructure required to handle and evacuate output.
Coal India said the investments were aimed at strengthening its operational capabilities and supporting production and supply targets for the ongoing financial year. The company’s annual capex plan for 2026-27 stands at ₹16,500 crore.
