Based on this analysis, the lights adaptively adjust green or red durations, easing choke points and optimising vehicle flow. Data from cities piloting these systems show significant gains: a reduction of up to 25% in travel time and nearly 20% lower emissions. That’s a transformative figure in a country where urban pollution is among the highest in the world and where vehicular traffic is a major contributor to carbon emissions. Beyond reducing delays and idling at signals, AI traffic management systems offer deeper benefits. Without intelligent infrastructure, traffic snarls and environmental degradation may only worsen. AI-powered traffic lights offer a rare win-win: smoother commutes and a healthier planet. Some Indian metropolitan regions including Bengaluru and Pune have begun adopting smart traffic systems on select routes, showing promising early results. As costs decline and technology improves, the government is expected to promote wider adoption under urban development and green mobility schemes.
