CISF-IIT Hyderabad MoU Builds New Drone Defence Capability

The Central Industrial Security Force has signed an MoU with IIT Hyderabad’s Technology Innovation Hub on Autonomous Navigation (TiHAN) to strengthen specialised training and technical preparedness against drone and other asymmetric aerial threats.

The agreement will allow Assistant Commandant probationers and Sub-Inspector trainees at the National Industrial Security Academy (NISA) to undertake short-duration capsule courses at TiHAN. The training will include practical exposure to drone assembly, flight operations and research into advanced autonomous systems, according to Telangana Today.

The collaboration links the CISF’s operational training system with an academic and technology development institution. TiHAN, which operates at IIT Hyderabad, will also provide academic and technical support for the CISF’s proposed Centre of Excellence for Drone and Anti-Drone Technology at the force’s Recruit Training Centre in Behror, Rajasthan.

The proposed centre is intended to become part of the CISF’s longer-term effort to build in-house specialisation in drone-related technologies. The agreement therefore goes beyond a single training programme by creating a channel through which research and laboratory-based work can be introduced into the force’s personnel development framework.

NISA Director and Inspector General Harpreet Kaur Sohi said the MoU would increase specialisation within the force and support its newly formed functional sector pattern of supervision. “By embedding advanced academic research into our training frameworks, we are creating a dynamic, knowledge-based ecosystem in the CISF,” Sohi said.

She added that the arrangement would equip personnel with technical expertise intended to help them anticipate and neutralise future threats while protecting vital assets. The statement places the partnership within the changing security requirements of installations and facilities where unmanned aerial systems can create operational challenges.

TiHAN Project Director Professor Rajlakshmi P said the agreement would help translate the hub’s autonomous systems research into operational use for the CISF. She linked the collaboration to the development of domestic capabilities in critical security technologies under the Atmanirbhar Bharat framework.

The announcement does not specify the full curriculum, the duration of each capsule course, the equipment to be deployed at the proposed centre or the timeline for its operationalisation. The next steps identified in the agreement are the delivery of specialised training at TiHAN and the provision of academic and technical assistance for the Behror centre.
