CIDCO Demolishes Over 2,100 Illegal Structures in Navi Mumbai

In a significant move to preserve the integrity and planned development of Navi Mumbai, the City and Industrial Development Corporation (CIDCO) has taken strict action against illegal constructions throughout the year 2024. CIDCO has successfully demolished over 2,100 unauthorized structures, reclaiming an impressive 2,06,431 square meters of land, marking a key milestone in the city’s battle against encroachment.

The demolition operations were spearheaded by the Controller of Unauthorized Constructions (CUC) under the leadership of Suresh Mengade, CIDCO’s Chief Vigilance Officer. These efforts were focused within CIDCO’s jurisdiction, which includes areas under both Navi Mumbai and NAINA (New Mumbai Airport Influence Notified Area). Throughout the year, CIDCO conducted a total of 547 demolition drives, addressing various forms of unauthorized constructions such as temporary structures, RCC buildings, and illegal stalls. As a result, 2,102 structures were successfully demolished across 302 of these drives. Prior to these actions, CIDCO had issued over 2,160 notices to the owners of these encroachments, under the Maharashtra Regional and Town Planning Act (MRTP), warning them of imminent demolition.

CIDCO Managing Director, Vijay Singhal, emphasized the importance of these drives in maintaining the planned development of Navi Mumbai. He stated, “These encroachments not only hinder the development of our city but also disfigure it. Regular action against illegal constructions is vital to ensure that Navi Mumbai’s reputation as a well-planned city continues to grow, especially as major projects like the Navi Mumbai International Airport, Atal Setu (MTHL), Ulwe Coastal Road, and the Metro system progress.” CIDCO’s demolition drives are a crucial part of ensuring that ongoing and future infrastructure projects in Navi Mumbai are not obstructed by illegal constructions. In some instances, police protection was provided by local police stations to ensure that these drives could be carried out without disruptions.

Apart from regular demolitions, CIDCO has also taken steps to alert the public, publishing notices in local newspapers to warn citizens about unauthorized constructions. CIDCO has further advised potential property buyers in Navi Mumbai and NAINA areas to verify construction-related documents meticulously before making any transactions, as a preventive measure against potential financial deception. This ongoing effort highlights CIDCO’s commitment to maintaining the city’s planned growth, ensuring that illegal structures are removed to clear the way for Navi Mumbai’s progressive future.
