Chennai Vande Bharat Food Check Faces Scrutiny

A passenger on the Mysuru–Chennai Vande Bharat Express reported finding an adhesive tube inside a dal vada served onboard, raising questions over food preparation and quality-control systems on premium rail services. The reported incident occurred on train 20608 during its journey towards Chennai and has prompted a complaint to IRCTC. The episode also highlights how a single catering failure can become a wider passenger-safety concern.

According to the passenger group travelling on the service, the foreign object was discovered while snacks were being served during the afternoon journey. The passenger reportedly bit into the vada before noticing the tube. Some adhesive allegedly came into contact with his mouth after the tube opened. The passengers subsequently reported the matter to onboard staff and submitted a complaint to IRCTC. They also raised the issue publicly on social media. The catering agency and railway authorities have yet to establish publicly how the tube entered the food item or where the lapse occurred.

The incident is particularly significant because train 20608 is part of a heavily used intercity rail corridor connecting Mysuru, Bengaluru and Chennai. The service operates with onboard catering and has become an important option for passengers travelling between the three major urban centres. Recent passenger feedback has also included concerns about food quality, cleanliness and onboard services, indicating that catering remains an important part of the passenger experience. For passengers, the issue extends beyond an unpleasant meal. Food served on long-distance trains must pass through multiple stages, including preparation, packing, handling and distribution. A foreign object entering a sealed food product suggests that controls at one or more stages may require closer scrutiny.

The Vande Bharat food safety question also has a broader infrastructure dimension. As Indian Railways increasingly positions premium trains as alternatives to road and air travel, passenger confidence becomes part of the value proposition. Reliability cannot be measured only through journey times and punctuality; safe food, clean facilities and accountable service standards are equally important.Industry observers say investigations should establish the source of the contamination, identify the responsible catering chain and determine whether similar products from the same batch were distributed to other passengers. Such checks could help prevent isolated failures from becoming recurring risks. The Vande Bharat food safety concern now rests on the response that follows. A transparent investigation, documented corrective action and stronger inspection at each catering stage would provide passengers with greater assurance while strengthening standards across India’s expanding premium rail network.
