Chennai’s suburban rail commuters will face temporary disruptions on the night of June 5 as Southern Railway undertakes scheduled engineering work on a key section of the city’s network. The changes will affect several late-night electric multiple unit services and underline the continuing challenge of balancing essential infrastructure maintenance with reliable urban mobility for one of India’s busiest metropolitan regions.
According to railway authorities, track and power-related works have been planned between Kodambakkam and St Thomas Mount stations from 11.05 pm on June 5 until 3.05 am on June 6. The maintenance activity has prompted the cancellation of selected services and partial curtailment of others operating on the Chennai suburban network. Two Chennai Beach–Tambaram EMU services scheduled to depart at 11.40 pm and 11.59 pm will not operate. In addition, late-night trains originating from Guduvancheri and Chengalpet and bound for Chennai Beach will run only on a truncated route, affecting passengers travelling to destinations beyond the revised operational limits.
The Chennai suburban trains network carries thousands of office workers, industrial employees and students every day and remains a critical component of the city’s low-carbon transport ecosystem.
