Daily passengers using Chennai’s suburban rail and Mass Rapid Transit System (MRTS) corridors say the current 20-minute train interval during office hours has significantly increased travel uncertainty, particularly for workers transferring between western suburban routes and the city’s southern business districts. The demand for 10-minute peak-hour services has resurfaced as passenger volumes continue to rise across the metropolitan region.Commuters travelling from industrial and residential belts such as Avadi, Tiruvallur and Arakkonam towards employment hubs along the MRTS corridor report longer interchange times at Chennai Beach station, where passengers often need to navigate multiple platforms to continue southbound journeys. The MRTS corridor remains strategically important for Chennai’s sustainable mobility ambitions because it links dense residential neighbourhoods with educational institutions, commercial districts and coastal urban zones. Infrastructure limitations within the MRTS system itself are also affecting capacity expansion. While suburban routes in northern and western Chennai have gradually shifted towards longer 12-car electric multiple unit trains, several elevated MRTS stations remain designed for shorter nine-car configurations.
