Chennai is preparing for a sharp rise in intercity passenger movement this weekend by deploying hundreds of additional public buses from its two major terminals, a move aimed at easing congestion, improving travel access and supporting regional connectivity across Tamil Nadu. The expanded services are expected to benefit thousands of commuters travelling for personal, religious and economic purposes.
State transport authorities have scheduled a large-scale augmentation of services from the Kilambakkam Integrated Bus Terminus and the Koyambedu terminus as demand is projected to rise ahead of the weekend. The initiative reflects the growing pressure on urban transport systems as Chennai continues to function as the principal mobility hub for southern India. Under the plan, hundreds of special buses will connect Chennai with major districts including Tiruchy, Madurai, Tirunelveli, Nagercoil, Kanniyakumari, Coimbatore, Salem, Erode, Tirupur and Kumbakonam. Additional services have also been arranged for destinations such as Tiruvannamalai and Thoothukudi, which traditionally witness increased passenger volumes during weekends and festive periods.
Transport planners note that strengthening special bus services during periods of peak travel helps reduce overcrowding at stations and discourages dependence on private vehicles. Greater use of public transport can lower traffic congestion and contribute to reduced carbon emissions, aligning with broader goals of sustainable and resource-efficient urban mobility. Operations from the Koyambedu terminus will primarily cater to routes towards Nagapattinam, Velankanni, Hosur and Bengaluru. Authorities have also arranged return services from these destinations to ensure smoother movement of passengers heading back to Chennai after the weekend. The latest arrangements highlight the increasing importance of multimodal infrastructure in Chennai. Since the commissioning of the Kilambakkam facility, transport authorities have been attempting to redistribute passenger flows away from the city core, a strategy intended to improve traffic conditions and make long-distance travel more efficient.
