A large-scale night inspection across Chennai has revealed that more than 1,800 streetlights are currently out of service, prompting civic authorities to initiate urgent repairs to improve illumination across neighbourhoods. The review covered the city’s extensive network of over 3.1 lakh streetlights and was conducted across all administrative zones. According to officials overseeing the exercise, 1,817 lights were found to be non-functional, exposing maintenance gaps within critical urban infrastructure that residents rely on daily.Authorities have prioritised immediate restoration work for nearly 1,100 faulty units, with repairs expected to be completed within a day. A further set of around 700 streetlights requires more extensive intervention because of underground cable-related problems, which are expected to take longer to address.
