Chennai has initiated a major shift in urban water management by beginning groundwork for the installation of smart water meters across nearly one lakh high-consumption properties, a move expected to strengthen water accountability and improve distribution efficiency in a city that frequently faces seasonal stress on its water resources.
The initiative targets commercial establishments, industrial facilities, private institutions, mixed-use premises and large residential developments spread across all zones of the city. Urban planners view the project as an important step towards demand-side water management, allowing authorities to monitor usage patterns more accurately while supporting more equitable allocation of supplies. Officials associated with the programme said preliminary activities have commenced, including assessment of consumer databases and evaluation of existing billing systems. The smart water meters will rely on Internet of Things (IoT)-enabled technology capable of transmitting consumption data automatically.
