Additional long-distance rail services connecting Chennai and West Bengal have been scheduled as rising passenger demand continues to place pressure on inter-state mobility along India’s eastern seaboard. The move strengthens connectivity between major urban centres and supports the growing movement of workers, students and families dependent on affordable rail transport across southern and eastern India.
Southern Railway has announced further operations of the Chennai–Santragachi special train, extending temporary services into early July. The decision comes at a time when passenger volumes on the east coast corridor remain elevated, reflecting the increasing importance of rail networks in linking metropolitan economies and regional cities. Under the revised schedule, Train No. 06077 from Chennai Central will depart at 11.45 pm on June 27 and July 4 and is expected to reach Santragachi near Kolkata at 6.45 am on the third day. In the opposite direction, Train No. 06078 will leave Santragachi at 9 am on June 29 and July 6, arriving in Chennai Central at 4.45 pm the following day.
The Chennai–Santragachi special train traverses a strategically important section of the country’s east coast rail network. Major halts include Gudur, Nellore, Vijayawada, Duvvada near Visakhapatnam, Bhubaneswar and Kharagpur, providing connectivity across Tamil Nadu, Andhra Pradesh, Odisha and West Bengal.Transport experts note that periodic special services have become increasingly necessary as migration, business travel and educational mobility continue to intensify between large urban regions. Demand on routes linking Chennai with eastern India has risen steadily over the years, reflecting broader demographic and economic shifts.
