Chennai Road Network Faces Last Mile Challenge

The gradual opening of the Bengaluru Chennai Expressway is beginning to alter long-distance road travel between Karnataka and Tamil Nadu, reducing highway journey times while exposing unresolved connectivity gaps closer to urban centres. Recent commuter experiences indicate that although high-speed sections of the corridor are delivering smoother intercity movement, local roads linking the expressway to Chennai continue to slow journeys and highlight the need for integrated transport planning.

Travellers using the corridor reported completing the roughly 355–360 km journey between Bengaluru and Chennai in just over six hours under favourable traffic conditions. The dedicated access-controlled stretches enabled sustained cruising speeds on the main carriageway, significantly improving consistency compared with older highway routes that frequently encountered congestion through towns and mixed traffic sections. However, the benefits of the Bengaluru Chennai Expressway reduced noticeably after exiting the controlled-access corridor. Motorists entering the Chennai metropolitan region encountered slower movement on narrower connecting roads marked by speed breakers, mixed local traffic and limited overtaking opportunities. These sections, particularly around the Tiruvallur and Uthukottai approach, continue to influence overall travel reliability despite faster intercity infrastructure.

Urban mobility experts note that this pattern is common with newly commissioned expressways across India. While high-speed corridors reduce regional travel times, their effectiveness depends equally on the quality of feeder roads, ring roads and urban access routes. Without coordinated investment in these links, congestion simply shifts from national highways to suburban road networks. Alternative approaches through Ranipet, Ponnai and the Chittoor-Thatchur Expressway are also emerging as practical options for travellers heading towards southern parts of Chennai. Road users suggest these routes offer smoother movement while avoiding some of the congestion experienced on northern suburban connections, although route choice continues to depend on destination, traffic conditions and time of travel. The Bengaluru Chennai Expressway forms part of India’s broader programme to improve freight movement and strengthen economic integration between manufacturing centres in Karnataka, Andhra Pradesh and Tamil Nadu. Faster logistics can reduce transport costs, improve supply chain reliability and enhance industrial competitiveness, particularly for sectors dependent on time-sensitive deliveries.

Yet transport planners caution that success should not be measured solely by higher vehicle speeds. Sustainable mobility requires expressway investments to be complemented by multimodal planning, safer local roads, efficient public transport links and better last-mile connectivity. Improving pedestrian infrastructure, reducing conflicts with local traffic and strengthening links with ring roads will be equally important as traffic volumes increase. As additional sections of the corridor become operational, authorities are expected to monitor travel patterns and identify infrastructure bottlenecks beyond the expressway itself. Addressing these gaps will determine whether the corridor delivers lasting mobility benefits for commuters, freight operators and rapidly expanding urban regions rather than simply relocating congestion to city edges.
