Chennai Road Accidents Kill Two as Police Hunt Van Driver

Two people were killed in separate road accidents near Kelambakkam and Poonamallee, Chennai, with police searching for a tourist van driver in one case and arresting a private bus driver in the other.

Evangelin, a 19-year-old second-year BCA student, died after a tourist van hit her while she was crossing the road near Kelambakkam at about 1pm on Wednesday, according to the report. She died at the scene.

Kelambakkam traffic police sent her body to Chengalpet Government Hospital for a postmortem examination. A case has been registered and investigators are searching for the van driver.

The second fatal crash occurred on Tuesday morning near the Parivakkam signal on the Poonamallee-Bengaluru National Highway. Vikram, 22, a private firm employee and resident of Moovendhar Nagar in Thiruninravur near Avadi, was riding his motorcycle to work when a private bus travelling behind him rammed the two-wheeler.

Vikram fell onto the road and came under the bus’s rear wheels. He died at the spot. Police from the Avadi traffic investigation wing recovered his body and sent it to a private hospital in Porur for a postmortem examination.

The bus driver, identified as Murugan, 39, was arrested in connection with the Poonamallee crash. The report did not provide details of the specific charges or the immediate findings of the investigation.

The two incidents occurred on road corridors that connect expanding residential areas, workplaces and educational institutions across Chennai’s outer urban belt. The reported crashes involved different circumstances: a pedestrian being hit while crossing near Kelambakkam and a motorcycle being struck from behind near a highway signal at Parivakkam.

Police investigations into both cases are continuing. The Kelambakkam traffic police are attempting to trace the tourist van driver, while the Avadi traffic investigation wing is handling the case involving the private bus driver. Further details about the vehicles, road conditions and the circumstances leading to each collision were not provided in the report.
