Chennai Radial Road Potholes Expose Drainage Gaps

Fresh rain has turned sections of the 200-foot Pallavaram–Thoraipakkam Radial Road into a difficult commute, with water-filled potholes particularly affecting service lanes. The problem points to a wider infrastructure failure: a major drainage investment has not translated into a continuous system capable of moving rainwater away from the road surface.

The roughly 12-km corridor connects the GST Road side of Pallavaram with the OMR belt and serves commuters travelling towards Chennai’s southern employment centres. Its condition therefore has consequences beyond road safety. Delays, vehicle damage and slower bus and two-wheeler movement can raise daily travel costs for workers, students and businesses. The immediate weakness is most visible on the service roads. Several stretches remain uneven or inadequately restored, while rainwater collects in depressions. Once water remains on the carriageway, it can penetrate cracks in the pavement and accelerate deterioration, increasing the likelihood that routine maintenance will eventually require more expensive reconstruction.

The drainage network itself has faced gaps for years. The State Highways Department’s project, valued at about ₹225 crore, was intended to create large stormwater channels along the corridor and improve flood management between Pallavaram Periya Eri and the Pallikaranai area. Earlier reports also recorded incomplete drain links and construction-related disruption along the route. That design becomes less effective if road runoff cannot enter the system. In several locations, the absence or inadequacy of inlets means water can remain on the road even where a drain exists nearby. Earlier reporting also highlighted stretches where drainage construction occupied parts of service roads, underlining the difficulty of fitting flood infrastructure into a heavily built-up corridor.

The problem is particularly significant because the corridor sits within a connected network of lakes, marshland and urban drainage channels. Pallavaram Periya Eri and other water bodies are part of the wider hydrological system. When roads, drains and water bodies are treated as separate projects, rainfall can simply shift the flooding problem from one location to another. For a city facing increasingly disruptive intense rainfall, Radial Road potholes should therefore not be treated only as a resurfacing issue. A durable response requires functioning drain inlets, continuous outfalls, restored service lanes and regular inspection before heavy rain arrives.Radial Road potholes are ultimately a symptom of a larger maintenance gap. Completing the drainage network and protecting the road asset would reduce repeated repair costs while making one of south Chennai’s important transport corridors safer and more resilient.
