A new assessment of mobility coverage across Chennai has found that a substantial section of residents remains beyond convenient access to public transport, highlighting the challenge of connecting rapidly expanding suburbs with the city’s existing transit systems. The findings are expected to shape upcoming efforts aimed at strengthening neighbourhood-level connectivity and improving access to buses and rail corridors.
The study, released by transport planners and discussed by officials overseeing urban mobility services, examined how effectively residents across the Chennai Metropolitan Area are served by public transport. While the city possesses one of the country’s larger bus networks, the analysis indicates that only 61% of residents live within accepted walking distances from a public transport facility. The findings underscore the importance of public transport access in a metropolitan region that now extends into parts of Chengalpattu, Kancheepuram and Tiruvallur districts. Urban planners note that improving accessibility has become increasingly critical as residential growth shifts towards peripheral zones where transport infrastructure has not kept pace with population expansion.
Buses continue to carry the overwhelming majority of commuters, accounting for more than two-thirds of trips undertaken through organised public transport systems. Suburban rail services and the metro network together constitute the remainder of the mobility ecosystem. The metropolitan bus operator currently manages hundreds of routes covering more than 2,000 kilometres across the region. However, the assessment points to stark geographical disparities. Established commercial and residential districts in central Chennai enjoy relatively strong connectivity, whereas emerging suburban clusters such as Porur, Mugalivakkam, Chitlapakkam, Selaiyur, Madipakkam and surrounding localities have comparatively weaker access to transit infrastructure.
More notably, only around one-third of residents are estimated to have access to high-frequency bus services within a short walk. Experts say this has implications for economic productivity, social inclusion and environmental sustainability, as limited public transport access often pushes households towards private vehicles and increases congestion and emissions. Officials are preparing a first- and last-mile connectivity programme intended to bridge these gaps. The initiative is expected to introduce electric feeder buses in underserved areas and improve links with metro corridors. Transport specialists have also recommended redesigning bus routes, adding stops, increasing service frequency and investing in safer pedestrian pathways and cycling infrastructure.
Observers say previous attempts to improve neighbourhood connectivity through privately operated mini-bus services delivered mixed outcomes, making the success of the upcoming programme particularly significant. As Chennai continues to urbanise, mobility experts argue that ensuring reliable and equitable transport coverage will be central to creating a more inclusive and climate-resilient metropolitan region. Future investments, they say, will need to prioritise accessibility rather than simply expanding infrastructure, ensuring that growing communities are connected to jobs, education and essential services.
