Bellahalli traffic congestion has become a daily problem for motorists and parents travelling through north Bengaluru, with the Hennur Traffic Police seeking approval to install signals at Bellahalli Junction and the nearby Kannur-Kothanur Junction.
The two intersections face severe delays during peak hours as rising vehicle volumes converge on routes leading towards REVA University Road, Kogilu, Bhartiya City and Kannur Main Road. Parents dropping children at nearby schools are among those reporting longer journeys and safety concerns, particularly while crossing the junctions on two-wheelers.
The Hennur Traffic Police Inspector said two letters had been written to higher authorities requesting a traffic signal at Bellahalli Junction. “Traffic signals will be installed as soon as higher authorities give consent to the proposal,” the inspector said.
The police have identified Bellahalli Circle and the Kannur-Kothanur Junction as critical congestion and safety points. Bellahalli Circle connects routes towards Kogilu, Kothanur, Hegde Nagar and Kannur, making it an important interchange for residents, school traffic and other daily commuters.
According to social activist Habiba Subhan, both junctions experience severe gridlock during peak hours because of the rapid increase in traffic and the absence of signals. She urged traffic authorities to install signals at both locations, citing the risks faced by motorists navigating the intersections.
Parents have also described a sharp change in traffic conditions. Sowmya KM, a resident of Sri Sai Layout, said Bellahalli Junction had been easier to cross two years ago but that the increase in vehicle density had made daily travel more difficult. She appealed to authorities to install signals to reduce traffic jams.
Another parent, who requested anonymity, said taking her daughter to school on a two-wheeler had become difficult because of the traffic movement at the junction. She blamed the Bengaluru North City Corporation and the Traffic Police for not taking measures to install the signals and said the issue affected thousands of motorists.
Realtor Syed Nizamuddin also said traffic jams at Bellahalli Junction had become a major obstacle for commuters. In his view, vehicular movement would improve if the authorities installed traffic signals.
The immediate decision rests with the higher authorities whose consent has been sought by the Hennur Traffic Police. Until approval is granted, the two junctions will continue to rely on existing traffic management arrangements during peak-hour movement.
