Krishnapatnam Port has set a target of loading 25 million tonnes of freight by rail during the current financial year after expanding its cargo-handling infrastructure, according to a review by South Coast Railway’s Principal Chief Operations Manager Vineet Kumar.
Kumar inspected Adani Krishnapatnam Port and railway facilities in the surrounding region on Friday, assessing infrastructure, safety measures and operational plans aimed at increasing freight movement. He also held discussions with port CEO Jagadeesh Patel on ongoing infrastructure projects and joint initiatives to strengthen rail-linked cargo handling.
The port has added a feeding conveyor to its silo-loading system, allowing two silos to operate simultaneously. The upgrade is intended to improve loading efficiency and support higher bulk cargo volumes moving through the port’s rail network.
Krishnapatnam Port has also added another mechanised berth, taking its total to six mechanised berths capable of handling Capesize vessels. Each of these vessels can carry more than one lakh tonnes of cargo, increasing the port’s capacity for bulk cargo handling.
The new rail-loading target is higher than the 22.7 million tonnes of freight loaded by rail during the previous financial year. The target links the port’s expanded handling infrastructure with a larger role for rail in moving bulk cargo from the facility.
During the inspection, Kumar visited Manubolu, Krishnapatnam, Niduguntapalem and Rapur railway stations, along with their goods sheds. He reviewed freight facilities, operational safety arrangements and the progress of infrastructure works at these locations.
The inspection also focused on identifying bottlenecks and ensuring that ongoing works can support growing freight demand. The railway and port authorities assessed measures to streamline cargo handling and improve the efficiency of freight operations across the connected facilities.
Senior Divisional Operations Manager A. Suresh Reddy and Divisional Commercial Manager G. Mohana Krishna accompanied Kumar during the field inspection. The review is part of coordinated efforts by South Coast Railway and the port authorities to expand freight infrastructure and support the port’s higher rail-loading target during the current financial year.
