Chennai Metro Tunnel Push Expands Corridor Four Connectivity
Chennai’s expanding underground metro network has entered another significant construction phase with fresh tunnelling work commencing beneath some of the city’s most densely developed neighbourhoods. The latest advance on Phase II’s Corridor 4 is expected to strengthen future east-west connectivity while presenting complex engineering challenges beneath an already congested urban landscape.
The Chennai Metro Rail Limited has initiated a new underground excavation between Tirumayilai and Boat Club stations, marking another milestone in the city’s long-term effort to expand rapid transit infrastructure. The Chennai Metro tunnel section stretches for more than two kilometres and forms part of Corridor 4, one of the key links intended to improve public transport access across residential and commercial districts. Unlike conventional underground construction, the alignment passes through multiple geological formations that demand careful engineering management. Project teams are expected to navigate softer surface soils before entering harder rock strata, conditions that require continuous monitoring to minimise settlement risks and protect surrounding buildings, utilities and road infrastructure. Urban planners note that such construction is particularly sensitive in mature city neighbourhoods where dense development leaves little room for surface disruption.
The excavation will continue through intermediate stations using a drag-through process, enabling the tunnel boring machine to advance without being dismantled and relaunched. This approach reduces construction downtime and limits additional excavation activity at station sites, potentially lowering environmental disturbance and shortening project schedules. One technically demanding segment also involves a fully stacked tunnel arrangement, where parallel metro tunnels are positioned vertically rather than side by side because of limited underground space.The Chennai Metro tunnel expansion forms part of the wider Phase II programme aimed at increasing public transport capacity as the metropolitan region experiences sustained population growth and rising travel demand. Construction beneath active urban corridors also demands transparent communication with residents and businesses affected by traffic diversions, construction noise and temporary access restrictions. Careful coordination between civic agencies and project authorities will remain important to reduce disruption while maintaining construction safety in densely populated neighbourhoods. As tunnelling progresses, the focus will gradually shift towards station construction, systems installation and network integration.
