Chennai Metro Phase 2 Set for October 11 Launch on Poonamallee Route

Chennai Metro Phase 2 services between Poonamallee and Vadapalani are scheduled to begin on October 11, with Prime Minister Narendra Modi expected to inaugurate the corridor and travel by metro with Tamil Nadu Chief Minister Vijay from Poonamallee to Porur.

Security arrangements are being intensified in Chennai ahead of the Prime Minister’s visit, according to a report by Dinamalar. The planned metro journey will cover the Poonamallee–Porur section, while the service launch will cover the completed Poonamallee–Vadapalani stretch.

Chennai Metro Phase 2 is being developed across three corridors spanning 118 km. On the corridor between Lighthouse and Poonamallee, work has been completed on a 26-km section, including the 10-km stretch between Poonamallee and Porur. The Railway Board has issued the safety certification required for starting metro operations between Poonamallee and Porur.

The remaining Porur–Vadapalani section has also reportedly completed all works. A trial run was conducted on January 11, but the opening was delayed because of reasons including the Assembly election, the report said. The planned October 11 launch would make the Poonamallee–Vadapalani route operational in stages, beginning with the section that has received the required safety clearance.

After inaugurating the metro service, Modi is scheduled to travel from Poonamallee to Porur with Vijay. The report describes this as the first government programme involving the Prime Minister and Vijay since Vijay assumed office as Chief Minister. From Porur, the Prime Minister is expected to travel by road to the Indian Institute of Technology Madras, where he will inaugurate the Ilaiyaraaja Maestro Centre for Music Learning and Research.

The visit is also scheduled to include a later trip to Vellore by helicopter. There, the Prime Minister is expected to lay foundation stones for and launch several infrastructure and transport improvement projects, including an airport-related project, according to the report.

For Chennai, the immediate operational milestone is the opening of the Poonamallee–Vadapalani metro connection. The corridor’s safety certification, completed construction on the reported sections and the earlier trial run are the key steps cited ahead of the October 11 inauguration. Further operational details, including service frequency, fares and the full schedule, were not specified in the report.
