Chennai Metro Corridor Four Track Contract Advances Expansion

Chennai’s expanding metro network has moved another step closer to completion after a new contract was awarded for track infrastructure on a crucial section of the city’s upcoming Yellow Line. The development is expected to accelerate work on Corridor 4, a route that could significantly reshape mobility patterns across western and central parts of the metropolitan region while reducing dependence on private vehicles.

State-run engineering company Ircon International has awarded an ₹81.09 crore contract to undertake the remaining standard-gauge track works between Lighthouse and Poonamallee Bypass stations. The package includes the supply, installation, testing and commissioning of tracks across both underground and elevated sections of the corridor and is scheduled for completion within a year. The contract forms part of the larger Chennai Metro Phase 2 programme, one of India’s most ambitious urban transit expansions. Spread over nearly 119 kilometres and divided into three corridors, the project aims to strengthen public transport connectivity in a city where growing vehicle ownership has intensified congestion, air pollution and travel times.

The Corridor 4 route, commonly referred to as the Yellow Line, extends for 26.1 kilometres and will feature 28 stations. Around 16 kilometres of the alignment runs underground, while the remaining stretch is elevated. Once operational, the corridor is expected to connect residential neighbourhoods, commercial districts and employment centres, creating faster east-west travel options for commuters. Urban planners say the Chennai Metro Phase 2 expansion carries implications beyond transportation. By linking peripheral areas with established business districts, the project could influence real estate activity, encourage transit-oriented development and support denser, mixed-use urban growth patterns. Improved access to employment centres also has the potential to reduce inequalities in mobility by making public transport more accessible to lower and middle-income households. Transport experts note that the completion of track installation is a critical milestone because it enables the subsequent deployment of signalling systems, rolling stock testing and integrated operations. Delays in track works can often affect commissioning timelines for entire corridors.

The Chennai Metro Phase 2 programme is also being closely watched from a sustainability perspective. Public transit investments of this scale are increasingly viewed as essential to reducing carbon emissions from urban transport, which remains one of the fastest-growing sources of pollution in Indian cities. As construction progresses across multiple packages, attention will increasingly shift towards ensuring timely delivery, seamless multimodal integration and station-area planning that prioritises pedestrians and public transport users. For Chennai, the success of the Chennai Metro Phase 2 network may ultimately be measured not only by kilometres of rail built, but by how effectively it transforms everyday urban mobility and supports a more liveable and climate-resilient city.
