A key neighbourhood road connecting the DMS Metro station in Teynampet with Gopalapuram is facing growing concerns over unmanaged parking, roadside waste and poor street maintenance, creating daily obstacles for pedestrians, students and office-goers. Residents say the deteriorating condition of the Metro access road is undermining mobility in one of the city’s busiest mixed-use districts, highlighting wider challenges in managing urban public spaces around mass transit infrastructure.
The affected stretch, located behind the metro station near major educational institutions and residential pockets, functions as an important connector for thousands of daily users. During peak morning and evening hours, the road experiences heavy footfall from metro commuters alongside local traffic heading towards commercial areas on Dr Radhakrishnan Salai. However, residents report that unregulated vehicle parking and commercial spillover are increasingly narrowing the usable carriageway and footpath space. According to local residents, vehicles visiting nearby retail establishments frequently occupy significant portions of the street, reducing safe movement for pedestrians. The situation is further aggravated by food waste, discarded vegetables and wastewater reportedly entering the public roadway from adjoining commercial premises, resulting in unhygienic conditions and increasing the risk of slips, unpleasant odours and clogged roadside drains during rainfall.
Urban planners note that the quality of last-mile connectivity is critical to encouraging public transport use. Even where large investments have been made in metro infrastructure, poorly managed surrounding streets can discourage walking, reduce accessibility for elderly residents, women and children, and weaken the overall effectiveness of sustainable mobility networks.
