Chennai Krishna Water Supports Reservoirs Amid Dry Spell
Chennai’s drinking-water reservoirs are getting an important buffer from Krishna river inflows as the southwest monsoon struggles to provide consistent recharge across the city’s catchments. The additional supply through the Kandaleru–Poondi system is helping protect near-term water availability, but it also highlights how dependent Chennai remains on a narrow and climate-sensitive mix of sources.
Water entering Tamil Nadu through the Kandaleru–Poondi canal reached around 464 cusecs during the latest spell, according to water-management officials. The inflow is being routed through Poondi before reaching the terminal reservoirs that support Chennai’s drinking-water network.The timing is significant. Krishna water has already become an important supplementary source this year, after releases from Andhra Pradesh resumed following maintenance along the canal system. Earlier releases had delivered substantial volumes to Chennai, helping offset declining storage during the hotter months.For a city with a large and growing daily water requirement, the immediate benefit is more than a rise in reservoir levels. Stable raw-water availability gives treatment plants and distribution managers greater room to maintain supplies without relying excessively on emergency measures such as tanker distribution or accelerated groundwater extraction.
The latest inflow is particularly useful because Chennai’s five principal drinking-water reservoirs are currently holding roughly 44% of their combined capacity, according to officials. The figure provides a degree of operational comfort, but it should not be mistaken for long-term water security.Chennai’s vulnerability lies in the uneven geography of rainfall. The city receives relatively little rainfall during the southwest monsoon compared with its much stronger northeast monsoon season. That makes storage accumulated earlier in the year, inter-state transfers and alternative sources crucial during prolonged dry periods. The dependence on Krishna water also exposes an important infrastructure question. The Telugu Ganga arrangement provides Chennai with an inter-state water source, but moving that water through a long canal network requires reliable infrastructure, timely releases and coordination between states. Previous interruptions linked to maintenance have shown how quickly supply chains can become constrained.
For urban planners, the larger lesson is that reservoir storage alone cannot define resilience. Protecting local lakes, restoring catchments, reducing leakage and expanding treated wastewater reuse can create additional buffers before the next major rainfall failure. The present Krishna inflow therefore offers Chennai valuable breathing space. The more durable challenge is using that window to strengthen a diversified water system that can withstand both extended dry spells and increasingly erratic rainfall.
