A gang hacked V. Maithreyan, a Category C history-sheeter from Mylapore, to death in broad daylight in Adyar on Tuesday while he was returning after appearing at the Mylapore police station to comply with a bail condition, Deccan Chronicle reported. His father, who was travelling with him in an autorickshaw, witnessed the attack.
Passersby alerted the Adyar police after the assault. Police reached the location and took Maithreyan to a private hospital in Taramani, where he was declared dead. His body was later shifted to Government Royapettah Hospital for a postmortem examination.
Maithreyan had several cases pending against him and had been released on conditional bail the previous week in one of the cases. Under the bail conditions, he was required to sign the register at the Mylapore police station every day.
According to the report, Maithreyan had appeared at the police station before travelling towards a relative’s house in Thiruvanmiyur. The attack took place while he was in the Adyar area. The incident has raised immediate concerns over the safety of people travelling through a busy part of south Chennai during the day, although the supplied report does not provide details of the attackers’ identities or the motive.
The gang reportedly uploaded a video of the attack on social media. Police said the video was removed after officers intervened. The report did not specify which platform carried the video or whether any arrests had been made.
The case also brings attention to the practical enforcement of conditional bail requirements. Maithreyan’s daily appearance at the Mylapore police station was intended to meet a legal condition, but the attack occurred after he left the station while travelling through another police jurisdiction. The supplied report does not state whether police had received any prior threat information or whether security arrangements were in place for his movement.
Maithreyan’s father was present during the attack, while passersby alerted the police and emergency assistance followed. The police response included taking the injured man to hospital and intervening to have the attack video removed from social media. Further details about the investigation, arrests and the next legal steps were not available in the report.
The body was sent for postmortem examination at Government Royapettah Hospital. Police action following the killing and the outcome of the investigation will determine the next developments in the case.
