Chennai’s bus infrastructure needs a design rethink after an accessibility trial highlighted major differences in how wheelchair users and people with reduced mobility can board buses safely. A trial using a Metropolitan Transport Corporation electric bus near Vivekananda House showed that platform height, bus positioning and boarding space can directly affect whether public transport is genuinely accessible.
The exercise compared two nearby stops with different platform levels. A platform measuring about 300 mm allowed battery-powered wheelchair users to board more easily, while a roughly 150-mm platform created difficulties for several participants. The findings point to a wider planning issue: accessibility depends not only on buses but also on how streets and bus stops are designed around them. For wheelchair users, even a relatively small gap between a bus and platform can become a serious safety risk. During the trial, the vehicle was positioned around 1.5 feet from the platform. Participants warned that a wheelchair wheel could slip into the gap beneath the boarding ramp, potentially causing a fall.
The trial also highlighted the need for better support around boarding ramps. People with perception-related difficulties may require clearer side guidance and more predictable boarding conditions. Such details are often overlooked when accessibility is treated as a compliance requirement rather than as part of everyday transport planning.The issue extends beyond platform height. Urban planners and accessibility specialists say Chennai’s bus stops also need adequate length and clear space around the boarding zone. At some locations, only one bus can stop properly. A second vehicle may be forced to wait behind or alongside it, disrupting the boarding path and making independent access harder. There is also a standard challenge. A senior civic official indicated that Indian Road Congress guidance places conventional platform height at about 150 mm, while acknowledging that a 300-mm platform can improve accessibility for buses designed for near-level boarding. This gap between standard road design and inclusive mobility needs closer coordination between transport and civic agencies.
The wider economic impact is significant. Accessible public transport can improve access to employment, education, healthcare and commercial areas for people with disabilities and older passengers. It also reduces dependence on specialised or private mobility, supporting a more efficient and equitable urban transport system. For Chennai, the next step is to move beyond isolated accessibility trials. Bus stop upgrades should integrate platform dimensions, kerb alignment, stopping distance, pedestrian space and boarding operations from the outset. Accessible bus stops can then become part of routine street design, helping the city build a transport network that works for a wider share of its population.
