Chennai AC Suburban Trains Expand West to Avadi and Arakkonam

Chennai’s AC suburban trains will expand to the western section from Friday, with Southern Railway beginning a 30-day weekday trial linking Moore Market Complex with Avadi, Tiruvallur and Arakkonam. The service will give commuters on one of the city’s major suburban corridors an air-conditioned rail option during selected morning and evening trips.

The Chennai Division of Southern Railway will operate the service using the second air-conditioned suburban electric multiple unit, according to officials. The train will run between Moore Market Complex railway station and destinations on the western suburban line, including Avadi, Tiruvallur and Arakkonam.

The trial is scheduled to operate only on weekdays. In the morning session, the first service will leave Avadi for Arakkonam at 6.30 a.m. It will then operate from Arakkonam to Moore Market Complex at 8 a.m., followed by a Moore Market Complex-to-Avadi service at 9.45 a.m.

The evening schedule will begin with an Avadi-to-Moore Market Complex service at 5.25 p.m. A train will then leave Moore Market Complex for Arakkonam at 6.30 p.m., before operating from Arakkonam to Avadi at 8.10 p.m.

The introduction extends Southern Railway’s AC suburban train experiment beyond the Beach–Chengalpattu corridor via Tambaram, where the railway is already operating an air-conditioned service. Officials said the existing AC train had received a good response from passengers. The western-section trial will allow the railway to test demand on another heavily used suburban route before any decision on continuation or expansion.

The route connects the city’s central railway area with suburban settlements extending towards Tiruvallur and Arakkonam. Moore Market Complex is an important rail interchange near Chennai Central, while Avadi, Tiruvallur and Arakkonam serve commuter populations along the western railway corridor. The weekday-only schedule places the trial’s services around the morning and evening travel periods, when demand for suburban rail is generally concentrated.

Southern Railway has not stated in the supplied announcement whether the western-section services will continue beyond the 30-day trial or whether additional trips will be introduced. The announcement also does not specify a separate fare structure for the new services. On the existing Beach–Chengalpattu AC route, the minimum fare is ₹35, while travel from Chennai Beach to Tambaram costs ₹85 and to Chengalpattu costs ₹105, according to the report.

The next milestone is the start of the 30-day trial on the western section. Its weekday operation and scheduled services will provide the railway with an initial basis for assessing passenger response on the Moore Market Complex–Avadi–Tiruvallur–Arakkonam corridor.
