Chennai Aavin Milk Shortage Puts New ₹2.23-Crore Lab in Spotlight

Aavin milk shortage complaints in Chennai were brought into focus after Tamil Nadu Chief Minister Vijay inspected a newly built laboratory facility at the Madhavaram milk dairy and reviewed procurement and distribution with officials on October 7. The chief minister also visited the MLA office in his Perambur constituency, where he heard residents’ grievances and received petitions in person.

The laboratory’s subsidiary building, constructed at a cost of ₹2.23 crore, was inaugurated at the Madhavaram dairy during the visit. According to Dinamalar’s report, the facility has advanced equipment intended to enable detailed testing of milk and milk products.

During the inspection, Vijay sought information from officials on the procurement and distribution of milk. The visit comes amid complaints in recent weeks about shortages of Aavin milk in some areas. The report did not provide figures for the alleged shortage or specify the locations and duration of supply disruptions. It said the inspection has raised expectations among consumers that the availability of milk packets may improve.

Aavin is Tamil Nadu’s state-run milk cooperative network, making the functioning of its dairies and distribution system directly relevant to households across Chennai. The Madhavaram facility is one of the locations involved in the processing and handling of milk products for the city’s supply chain. The newly opened laboratory is expected to support testing of milk and dairy products using modern equipment.

At the Perambur MLA office, the chief minister met residents from his constituency and received petitions on local issues. Residents raised concerns about rainwater stagnation in parts of North Chennai, while the chief minister also sought details from officials about preparedness for the coming monsoon.

Vijay instructed officials to take immediate steps on the petitions submitted by constituency residents, according to the report. The meeting brought together two separate but routine urban service concerns: the reliability of an essential food distribution network and the management of rainwater in a densely populated part of Chennai.

The report did not state the number of petitions received, identify specific locations affected by waterlogging, or provide a deadline for resolving the complaints. It also did not announce a new milk supply schedule or quantify any operational changes at the Madhavaram dairy. The next steps will depend on the follow-up action by the concerned departments on the petitions, milk distribution review and monsoon preparedness measures.
