Chandrapur GMC Hospital Ready, but 500 Beds Await Opening

Chandrapur Government Medical College’s new 500-bed hospital is ready to open, but its inauguration has been delayed because the model code of conduct is in force, prolonging the wait for expanded public healthcare capacity in eastern Vidarbha. The fully air-conditioned facility is expected to provide advanced treatment to patients from Chandrapur and neighbouring districts who currently travel to Nagpur for specialised care.

The new hospital campus of Karmaveer Marotrao Kannamwar Government Medical College has modern facilities, and the water supply issue reported during the project has been resolved. However, the facility cannot begin operations until the inauguration is held. Dean Dr Milind Kamble told The Times of India that the hospital building was ready, but the inauguration date would be finalised once the situation permitted.

The campus has been under development since 2019 and was initially scheduled for completion by 2023. The Covid-19 pandemic disrupted the construction timeline. The delay has also kept the medical college dependent on the district civil hospital and tuberculosis hospital, facilities it has used since the college was established in 2015.

The new hospital is intended to strengthen access to medical treatment in Chandrapur and surrounding districts. At present, patients requiring specialised healthcare often travel to Nagpur. The facility’s 500-bed capacity could therefore expand the availability of inpatient treatment closer to where patients live once the hospital becomes operational.

Water availability at the campus has been addressed through six borewells. The available water capacity is estimated to meet the hospital’s requirements for around two-and-a-half years. The assessment provides an initial supply arrangement for the facility, although its long-term operations will also depend on adequate staffing and other services being in place.

Around 20 faculty positions remain vacant across the professor, associate professor and assistant professor cadres. The vacancies affect the college’s academic activities, postgraduate training and delivery of healthcare services. The institution admits 150 MBBS students annually and offers 20 postgraduate courses. Five MBBS batches have graduated since the college began functioning.

The staffing gap is a significant operational issue because the new building alone will not determine how much of its planned capacity can be used. Faculty availability will influence teaching, postgraduate supervision and the hospital’s ability to deliver services alongside its academic responsibilities.

The inauguration remains on hold until the model code of conduct is no longer in force. The administration is expected to finalise the opening date once the situation permits, after which the medical college can begin shifting from its existing premises and prepare the new hospital for operations.
