Census 2027 Telangana Schedule Brings Digital Enumeration to Hyderabad

Census 2027 Telangana population enumeration will begin in January 2027, with residents able to submit their details online before census staff conduct house-to-house visits, officials said during a training programme held for Greater Hyderabad Municipal Corporation personnel.

The second phase of the census will cover individual members of households and will follow the first phase, which records housing conditions and household details such as the head of the family and the type of house. The Union government has notified 40 questions for the population-enumeration exercise.

The questionnaire will seek information on caste, religion, education, occupation, economic activity, migration and other socio-economic details. It will also ask about the highest educational qualification attained, occupation, the nature of the relevant industry, trade or service, the number of children, total bank accounts, the place of Covid-19 vaccination and previous place of residence and reasons for migration, wherever applicable.

Residents may also be asked to provide their Aadhaar number, voter ID number and Indian passport number, where available or applicable. The questionnaire includes a question on the availability of a driving licence. Officials said the exercise is not limited to caste data and is intended to capture wider socio-economic information about households and their members.

“There is perception that Population Enumeration (PE) is a process to collect caste details, but this task is about understanding socio-economic status and caste is only one among the entire component,” an official said.

The training programme was held for charge clerks and technical assistants from Circles 1 to 30 and the Cantonment Board under the GHMC. Telangana director of census operations Bharathi Hollikeri, GHMC commissioner R.V. Karnan and other officials briefed staff on procedures and operational requirements for the second phase.

The programme covered the formation of additional enumeration blocks, preparation of abridged house lists and the use of the Census Management and Monitoring System portal. Field staff were also trained to use the population-enumeration mobile application to collect and record responses to the 40 questions.

Officials explained the self-enumeration facility, through which residents will be able to register and submit their information on a dedicated online portal. The training also included publicity and awareness activities, field-level arrangements and other operational requirements.

Census officials instructed staff to ensure that every family, household, census house and building is covered under the prescribed procedures, without omissions or duplication. The population-enumeration phase is scheduled to begin in Telangana in January 2027.
