BWSSB Reassesses Hesaraghatta Lake Water Allocation Amidst Local Opposition

The Bangalore Water Supply and Sewerage Board (BWSSB) finds itself at a crossroads regarding the utilisation of Hesaraghatta lake water to meet the burgeoning demands of Bengaluru.

This decision came under scrutiny following fervent opposition voiced by local farmers and villagers residing in the vicinity of the lake. Representatives from the Karnataka Rajya Raitha Sangha have engaged in dialogue with BWSSB Chairman Ramprasat Manohar V, highlighting the invaluable benefits the lake offers to surrounding communities. Suggestions have been put forth advocating for the prioritisation of lake restoration efforts, including desilting and pollution mitigation measures, over diverting its water resources.

“Hesaraghatta lake was built in 1894 to enable water supply to Bengaluru. Water was being pumped from the Soladevanahalli pumping station. Now, owing to the crisis, we were thinking of drawing a small amount of water from the lake to supply to the city. This will also help us be prepared to use water from the Yettinahole project. However, now that farmers have opposed it, we will rethink the decision.”

In response to the concerns raised, Chairman Manohar has announced a reconsideration of the initial proposal. He cited the recent influx of rainfall as a potential alleviating factor, potentially diminishing the immediate need for Hesaraghatta lake water extraction. However, Manohar emphasised the necessity for extensive consultations with governmental bodies and local stakeholders before arriving at a conclusive decision. Moreover, Chairman Manohar conveyed BWSSB’s intention to formally petition the government for comprehensive lake development initiatives. Acknowledging the pivotal role played by Hesaraghatta lake in sustaining local communities and its potential significance for Bengaluru’s future water requirements, he underscored the imperative of undertaking developmental endeavors in tandem with the diverse interests of all involved parties.
