Buxar’s ₹10 Community Kitchen Brings Affordable Meals to the Needy

Buxar has launched a community kitchen serving a full meal for Rs 10, giving people struggling to afford food access to an affordable midday meal at the municipal night shelter near Kila Maidan. Named ‘Mai Ki Rasoi’, the facility will operate daily from noon to 1pm.

The kitchen was inaugurated on Wednesday under the coordination of Buxar Nagar Parishad chairperson Kamrun Nisha. Social workers Om Ji Yadav and Sumit Mansinghka took the initiative to establish the service, while Mahant Rajaram Sharan Das Ji Maharaj of the Sitaram Vivah Mahotsav Ashram formally opened it by cutting the ribbon.

The initiative is intended to provide food at a nominal price to poor and needy residents while allowing them to access the service with dignity. Organisers said the plan emerged after they observed that many people faced difficulty arranging food during the day.

Social worker Om Ji Yadav said the objective was to ensure that no needy person went hungry. He also said a free meal service was already being operated through the Roti Bank at Buxar railway station every night. The new kitchen adds a daytime food service at a municipal facility, extending the availability of meals beyond the railway station programme.

The location of the kitchen at the municipal night shelter places the service within an existing civic facility. The source report did not specify the number of meals to be served each day, the kitchen’s operating budget, the funding arrangement or the agency responsible for managing daily operations. It also did not state whether the Rs 10 price would be supported through municipal funds, donations or contributions from the organisers.

Buxar Nagar Parishad chairperson Kamrun Nisha said providing food to needy people had been part of her election agenda. She said the plan had taken shape with the support and involvement of the two social workers, and added that the civic body would extend all possible assistance to such public welfare initiatives.

The launch reflects a partnership between the municipal body and local social workers to use an urban public facility for a basic welfare service. Such arrangements can help extend access to food for people who may not have stable incomes, although the long-term reach of the programme will depend on its daily capacity, operating continuity and ability to maintain the announced meal price.

Social worker and blood donor Priyesh Ranjan welcomed the initiative, saying that a full meal for Rs 10 would strengthen the spirit of service and cooperation in society. Several ward councillors, social workers and local residents attended the inauguration.

The community kitchen is scheduled to serve meals every day between noon and 1pm. The Buxar Nagar Parishad has said it will provide assistance to the initiative, while the organisers are responsible for beginning the daily meal service at the municipal night shelter.
