BMC Tackles Tunnel Leakage, Initiates Expansion Joint Evaluation

The Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) has announced a successful intervention to address leakages detected within the Coastal Road Tunnel, marking a crucial milestone in ensuring the structural integrity of the infrastructure.

Following reports of water seepage from various points within the tunnel, BMC authorities swiftly undertook remedial measures, particularly focusing on expansion joints identified as the source of the leakage. BMC Commissioner Bhushan Gagrani personally inspected the repair work carried out within the tunnel, underscoring the municipality’s commitment to addressing infrastructural challenges promptly and effectively.

Earlier observations of water seepage along the tunnel walls prompted immediate action from BMC officials, who attributed the issue to seepage from expansion joints. While the leakage was not deemed severe, the BMC, in collaboration with construction partner L&T, implemented measures utilizing PBC (Polymer-Modified Bitumen Concrete) to staunch the flow of water. Consequently, moisture levels at all three expansion joints have been effectively mitigated.

An official from the BMC reassured citizens regarding the structural stability of the tunnel, affirming that expert consultations had verified its integrity. However, to ascertain the root cause of the leakage and prevent its recurrence, BMC has initiated a comprehensive examination of all expansion joints. This thorough inspection, facilitated by L&T, aims to identify and rectify any vulnerabilities, ensuring the long-term integrity and reliability of the Coastal Road Tunnel.

The Coastal Road project, a vital artery of Mumbai’s transportation network, has been a focal point of infrastructure development efforts, aimed at easing congestion and enhancing connectivity across the city. With the partial opening of the 10.58-km Coastal Road, stretching from Marine Drive to the Bandra Worli Sea Link, significant progress has been achieved in addressing the city’s infrastructural needs.

In light of recent developments, including the successful containment of tunnel leakage and ongoing inspection initiatives, Chief Minister Eknath Shinde has expressed confidence in the project’s trajectory. He indicated that the northbound tunnel is slated for operational readiness by June 10, underscoring the government’s commitment to delivering essential infrastructure projects in a timely and efficient manner.
