BMC Removes 11.4 Metric Tonnes of Waste in Post-New Year Cleanup Operation
In a massive operation following the New Year celebrations, the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) successfully cleared 11.4 metric tonnes of waste generated during the festivities on 31 December. The cleanup effort, which took place at several key public spaces, involved a team of 5,000 workers, including BMC staff, volunteers, and civic officials. The New Year’s Eve celebrations across Mumbai drew thousands to popular locations such as Marine Drive, the Gateway of India, Girgaon Chowpatty, and Juhu Chowpatty, where revelers gathered to ring in the New Year. The festivities, however, resulted in significant littering, particularly plastic waste, leading to a substantial cleanup task for the city’s civic body.
The BMC swiftly mobilised its resources to tackle the waste left behind at these crowded spots. The targeted locations included iconic sites like the Gateway of India, Marine Drive, Girgaon Chowpatty, and Byculla Zoo Junction, as well as other key areas such as Kalanagar Junction, Bandra Station, and Borivali market. The operation also extended to beach locations like Gorai Chowpatty, Aksa Chowpatty, Marve Chowpatty, and Mankhurd. The large-scale operation was supported by 70 types of equipment, such as compactors, e-sweepers, JCBs, dumpers, beach cleaning tools, and Bobcats. Specialized tools like litter pickers and misting machines were also employed to ensure thorough cleanup and sanitisation. The workforce worked diligently through the night shift to remove the debris and restore the areas to their original condition.
In addition to the waste removal, the BMC also focused on improving safety measures in high-traffic areas. Guard towers were set up at both the Gateway of India and Marine Drive, with four towers at the former and seven at the latter. The civic body also installed barricades and enhanced lighting to ensure public safety during the celebrations. The swift and efficient cleanup operation underscores the BMC’s commitment to maintaining cleanliness and safety across the city, particularly during major events that see large crowds. With the successful removal of 11.4 metric tonnes of waste, Mumbai’s iconic landmarks have been restored to their pristine state, ensuring a cleaner start to the New Year for the city’s residents and visitors alike.
