BMC Clean-Up Drive to Improve Eastern and Western Highways

The Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) is set to carry out an extensive clean-up drive across Mumbai’s Eastern and Western Express Highways from March 17 to March 22. The initiative, scheduled to take place between 10 pm and 6 am, aims to improve the city’s infrastructure and address long-standing cleanliness issues without affecting the flow of traffic.Focused on non-road elements like footpaths, service roads, dividers, and ramps, the drive will avoid direct interference with the main traffic lanes, ensuring that the city’s busy roads remain operational throughout the campaign.

The clean-up will use mechanical cleaning equipment and high-pressure jet washing to eliminate dirt and waste buildup, which often clutters these major urban arteries.
The initiative will also include the repair of broken paver blocks on footpaths, the maintenance of road traffic signals, and the removal of unauthorised hoardings. Authorities will focus on eliminating obstacles such as abandoned vehicles, ensuring smoother access for pedestrians and vehicles alike.

Additionally, the BMC plans to clean and maintain bus stops, the fencing around roadside trees, and public toilets located along these highways.
In line with the city’s broader sustainability goals, the drive reflects the BMC’s commitment to creating a cleaner, more eco-friendly, and sustainable urban space. The maintenance of these high-traffic areas not only aims to improve the aesthetics of the highways but also contributes to better public health and safety, aligning with the larger objective of building a cleaner and more livable city.

The clean-up will be carried out in collaboration with traffic police to ensure that temporary diversions are managed effectively, allowing for smooth operations during the night. This initiative comes as part of BMC’s ongoing efforts to enhance Mumbai’s urban landscape and provide residents with a cleaner, safer, and more sustainable environment. With the aim of creating a more equitable and gender-neutral city, the clean-up drive underscores the municipality’s role in promoting long-term urban development that benefits all citizens.
