BMC Begins Road Widening for Malad-Andheri Link

The Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) has initiated an ambitious road-widening project for Bhaskar Bhopi Road, a key route connecting Marve Road’s T-junction to Madh Jetty. The project aims to widen the road to 27.45 metres, significantly improving connectivity between Malad and Andheri. Once completed, the revamped road will also connect to the upcoming Madh-Versova Bridge, creating a crucial transport corridor for the western suburbs.

Bhaskar Bhopi Road serves as a lifeline for commuters travelling to popular destinations like Aksa Beach, Erangal Beach, and Dana Pani Beach. However, the road’s current width of just 6 to 8 metres has long caused congestion, traffic delays, and safety issues. Over the years, the deteriorating condition of the road has further exacerbated the challenges faced by residents and tourists alike. To address these issues, the BMC’s P/North Ward has undertaken the road-widening project under the Development Plan-2034. A senior civic official stated, “The project is essential to accommodate the growing vehicular traffic in the area. By eliminating bottlenecks and accident-prone zones, the upgraded road will improve safety and reduce travel time.

The enhanced connectivity to the Madh-Versova Bridge will further ease commuting between Malad and Andheri.” The project, however, comes with significant displacement challenges. According to BMC’s survey, the expansion will impact 529 structures and 420 land parcels. In the first phase, notices have been issued for the removal of 37 structures and 31 open plots. The remaining affected properties will receive notices in subsequent phases. The clearing process will be carried out in a phased manner to minimise disruptions. Once completed, this road-widening initiative is expected to enhance infrastructure, streamline traffic flow, and unlock greater mobility for commuters in Mumbai’s bustling western suburbs.
